Karl Gilligan: KG Elite Performance Founder

Karl Gilligan is the founder of KG Elite Performance. He is a Strength & Conditioning Coach, Sport Scientist and Physical Therapist.

In 2011, he devised the National Certificate in Strength & Conditioning (NCSC) course which has now become the industry leading Strength & Conditioning qualification for fitness professionals in Ireland. Since 2014, he has grown the courses internationally where they have been delivered in more than 10 countries worldwide with over 300 courses delivered and more than 4, 000 coaches certified through in-person education. In 2020, he created an online programme for coaches to complete their Strength & Conditioning qualification fully online. In 2021, he devised the Youth Strength & Conditioning Certification (YSCC) to provide specialised education for coaches working with youth athlete population groups.

Karl has extensive experience working in elite sport having worked with the the IRFU and Leinster Rugby from 2003 to 2007. He then moved in Olympic sports and worked with Irish Institute of Sport (IIS) athletes for 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. Karl has also worked with various inter-county GAA football teams, Airtricity Premier Division teams and Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) underage international golfers. More recently, he has been appointed as the lead Strength & Conditioning coach for World Rugby in preparation for the 2023 World Cup in France.

He qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Sport Science and a MSc in Strength & Conditioning from St. Mary’s University, London, UK. He was the first accredited member of the Irish Institute of Sport (IIS) in Strength and Conditioning, and is also a professional member with the NSCA (CSCS).

Karl was a keen sportsman having represented his province Connacht in Rugby at School Boy and U-21 levels as well as London Irish U-19 and Development squads. Whilst in Australia, he played 1st Grade with University of Queensland in Australia as well as various Division 1 AIL teams in Ireland. Karl also represented his County Sligo at U-16, Minor and U-21 levels in Gaelic Football and his province Connacht in Tennis at National Championships.
